Passage Planning
Passage Planning in Compass provides a range of facilities to plan your best route to navigate the seas.
HOW IT WORKS
Users draw a route on the map layer, plotting waypoints where required. The passage can be overlayed with a variety of information. Routes can be opened or saved within Compass or imported from your computer or ECDIS. A route can also be exported externally to a computer or ECDIS in various formats for compatibility.
Route information shows you the total distance of your passage along with an arrival time, once your ‘Departure Time’ and ‘Route Planning Defaults’ have been set. The ‘Route Planning Defaults’ section offers options to adjust various settings, including the average cruising speed. Parameters can also be adjusted by leg/waypoint where cruising speeds may vary.
Using the weather overlay on a planned route lets you view a quick-reference weather forecast for your departure time. An option to activate route warnings is also available, where warnings will appear on the route when the weather conditions reach or exceed the vessel’s preferred parameters. The parameters are set by the user for a more comfortable cruise, and can inform on where adjustments to your waypoints may be required.
Users can also view any charts & publications available to their route based on a specified corridor. Any items that intersect this corridor can be requested through Compass from the yacht manager.

In addition to the weather, Compass provides a range of additional overlays that can be used to impart more knowledge on the various regions that the vessel intends to travel.
Explore with Imray
Explore with Imray provides Compass users with over 13,500 articles from their library of cruising guides. These excerpts have been broken down and geo-tagged to their relevant location to offer specific information, including navigation advice, mooring facilities, port contacts, imagery and more.
The entire library of guides is available, free of charge, with all Compass subscriptions.
MARPOL
Compass subscriptions also include the MARPOL overlay which, when toggled on, highlights the coastal boundaries and zones where the MARPOL guidelines lay.
The feature is designed to provide geographical awareness of international MARPOL information to all Compass users in an easily accessible and interactive way.
When clicking various points on the map, users can view additional MARPOL information from Annex I to VI, detailing what materials are permitted and prohibited for discharge to that location.
Physical copies of the MARPOL publication can also be acquired from us. Contact us to order a copy.
Once a route is set, there is an option to view any products the vessel may own relative to the planned passage. The product search looks at what the yacht uses and lists paper and digital options that could include; UKHO, NOAA, ARCS and TimeZero Charting.
It is refined based on the specific holdings available for the plotted route. You can view charts in your folio that are active, asleep, ashore or not owned. Also viewable are any digital or physical publications, products and navigational equipment useful to the planned passage.
By clicking the Request Missing Items button, you can choose unowned products relevant to the route from the list to be shipped.
The Report function brings up visual references for outstanding chart corrections, active T&Ps and NAVAREA warnings on or local to the planned route. These can be viewed in more detail or printed. Route reports can be created and saved, and any previously saved reports can be opened for viewing, printing or emailing to specific crew members to be signed off.
